Pure Filth... What We're Reading This Morning: Jan. 9

- A Lorain woman was sentenced to 186 days (already served) in jail and three years of probation after being found guilty of child endangerment. Last July, police discovered that Erica Perez had been keeping her seven children in an environment riddled with garbage, alcohol and swarms of flies. The story is heinous and the details of the family's living conditions are atrocious. This type of story is, um, not a good way to start the day - and Perez's rather light sentence isn't helping matters, either.

- Forbes caught up with Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove to get a few lessons on what transparency means - both to big business and to the end user of a particular service or product.

- Cuyahoga County recently posted a video update of construction efforts along the soon-to-be northern extension of the Towpath Trail. It's enthralling stuff, and - more to the point - it brings up the perfect opportunity to revisit former Scene writer Kyle Swenson's October 2010 investigation into the project.
