Varejao Out for Season with Blood Clot, "Still Smiling"

Cleveland Cavaliers big man Anderson Varejao will be out for the remainder of the season after developing a blood clot — 'pulmonary embolism,' in Clinic parlance — in his left lung, following surgery. He's expected to be on blood thinning medication for at least three months.

So much for those hot trade prospects! This is the third consecutive season shortened by serious injury for Varejao. He only played 25 games of last year's abbreviated season because of a broken wrist, and a torn ankle tendon the year before kept him from all but 31 games.

GM Chris Grant, ever the cheerleader, gave a key update this morning about Varejao's ability to remain a "competitor" despite the dire straits. Then he rhapsodized about the endurance and pluck of the Brazilian's smile (see photo above).
