Argentinian Cardinal is New Pope

Posted By on Wed, Mar 13, 2013 at 3:55 PM

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina is the new Vicar of Christ on earth. He has taken the name Francis I, and is the first Latin American and first member of the Jesuit order to be elected Pope in the history of the Catholic Church.

At St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, Pope Francis issued his inaugural blessing and asked the world to pray for him as he begins his new voyage.

Church pundits speculated on live broadcasts that the selection of Bergoglio — who was not on the short list of favorites — suggest a willingness to embrace change and progress (as opposed to the selection of someone from Opus Dei, for example.)

Bergoglio was warm and grandfatherly during his remarks. He is 76 years old.
