Phil Dawson Is Heading To San Francisco

Posted By on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Via Twitter this afternoon, Browns kicker Phil Dawson announced that he will be leaving Cleveland and heading to the reigning Super Bowl participants, the San Francisco 49ers.

In related news, those occasional flashes of optimism here in town just got a little dimmer.

Out west, he'll replace David Akers, who had a fairly rough season and helped his team miss Super Bowl glory. At the same time, Dawson will be leaving a hell of a legacy in his wake.

The news brings to a close Dawson's 14 years with Cleveland, where Browns fans often hailed him as both the classiest guy on the field and the one player who could keep this whole thing together. He found himself the sole points-earner for the Browns on many a Sunday throughout the past decade.

Last year, Dawson earned a spot in the Pro Bowl for the first time with a solid season that included 29-of-31 field goals to hang his hat on.

He leaves our city with kind words and a gracious nod to his storied career here:

Drop your comments on Dawson's playing below and, well, we'll see you at the bar.
