Concert Review: Blowfly at the Beachland Tavern

Judging by the way 74-year-old rapper Blowfly (Clarence Henry Reid), who was decked out in a sparkling jumpsuit with his initials emblazoned on the front, gingerly walked to the stage last night at the Beachland Tavern, you wouldn’t think the guy was capable of a solid performance. And yet, he certainly delivered the goods in an entertaining, expletive-filled hour-long set that was likely the most irreverent Father's Day event in town.

Blowfly showed some real gusto right from the start as he introduced himself by saying, “Good evening motherfuckers. In case you don’t know, my name is Blowfly.” He then proceeded to serenade a fan at the front of stage, singing an a cappella version of his song “I Fucked Everything” in her honor. It was all in good fun and it showed the way Blowfly continues to push boundaries in a world dominated by political correctness. The rapper has built a career out of turning classics into x-rated parodies and he was in good form on his cover of the Sam Cooke tune “Chain Gang” that he twisted into “that’s the sound of the men buttfucking on the chain gang.” He revisited his tune “Rap Dirty,” a track he described as “the first rap song” and turned in hilarious send-ups of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and the Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go.” The Blues Brothers’ “Soul Man” became “Ho Man” and the list goes on.

Blowfly’s three-piece band effortlessly shifted from soul to funk to R&B and kept the dance floor going. At the set’s end, Blowfly shook hands with audience members and then carefully made his way to the merch booth (where he sold everything from T-shirts and CDs to Blowfly bobbleheads). It was clear he still gets a kick out of performing in front of fans.
