In what was called by event promoters the "most philanthropic ice cream social of all time," Michigan-based Denali Flavors partnered with Premium Ruggles Ice Cream to host a free ice cream giveaway today on Public Square.

The plan was to dole out 10,000 scoops of Moose Tracks — a "10,000 Scoop Challenge" via Facebook. And for every scoop Clevelanders ate, Denali Flavors pledged to donate $1 to The Salvation Army to support its ongoing programs for children.

A few minutes after 1:00 p.m., a Salvation Army spokesman got on the mic to announce that nearly 9,000 scoops had already been scooped, and the lines were still full.

"We've done a lot of events like this in other cities," he said, "but we've never gone through this much ice cream this fast."
