Scene Weekend Movie Guide: Famine Season

Better than youd probably assume.
  • Better than you'd probably assume.

Last weekend sort of signaled the end of the 2013 summer movie season — theatrical sigh — with the spectacular burst and fizzle of shit like One Direction: This is Us.

For the buffs or statistical analysts out there, that film garnered an impressive $8.8 million on its first day and proceeded to post nightmarish drop-offs on every consecutive day since. It was clear from the word Go that only young women cared about this film — a reported 98 percent of Fandango sales were to females — and that no one's going back for repeat viewings. Is anyone surprised?

Through the week, Lee Daniels' The Butler, We're the Millers, Planes and the underperforming sci-fi action thriller Elysium have been bopping around the top five box-office spots as moviegoers struggle to reckon with meager end-of-season lineups. Getaway, which opened last weekend to the opposite of acclaim, has been called the worst movie ever made by at least one prominent industry luminary.

Before Thursday's totals, Getaway hadn't managed to eclipse $6.5 million in box office revenue and enjoyed the rare distinction of a 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Zero percent, folks. Rogue morons from Toronto and Charlotte, respectively, have since written what pass for 'Fresh' reviews on the site, bolstering the film's rating to 2 percent. So things are looking up for Ethan Hawke.

This week, don't expect much in wide release. Vin Diesel's long-dormant Riddick returns — first film in the franchise since 2004's Chronicles of same — and that's about it...

Still plenty of options this weekend, though. Check out our newly organized weekend guide below for some off-the-beaten-path fare at Cleveland Cinemas and the Cinematheque, and our brief "Twitter capsules" to get you the info you need when the previews are start in like 20 minutes.
