The heightened intensity of polyrhythmic math was in full swing last night as Minus the Bear took the stage here in Cleveland.

Culling a crowd of dedicated fans from across the region, the band threw down a well-rounded set that hit on everything important about their catalog. The setlist drew on Planet of Ice heavily, which was terrific. In fact, having those songs sprinkled in among other material both new and old really highlighted how distinguished and elevated that album remains.

An early high-water mark came during "Into the Mirror," which itself was the sole high-water mark of the band's mostly meh 2010 album Omni. Live and onstage, the song was incredible. Singer Jennae Quisenberry from show opener Slow Bird came out to join in on the vocals, adding a really terrific depth to everything.

And that depth really came through on the band's two acoustic numbers of the night, "Absinthe Party at the Fly Honey Warehouse" and "Riddles." Minus the Bear is an electric, in-your-face kinda band, but their acoustic stuff is unbelievably rich. When Jake Snider took a seat and picked up the hollow-body, everyone in the audience was ready for a bit of a breather and a few moments of reflection. Before long, though, the band was back to its full-bodied charge with "Steel and Blood."

The set wrapped up with the off-the-charts electricity of "Knights," which got everyone ebbin' and bobbin' in the pit at the House of Blues.

The encore concluded with what is probably the band's most beloved tune, Pachuca Sunrise. Here, they jammed it out with an intense outro before sending everyone home smiling for the night.
