87.7 Rallies Clevelanders to Save Station

Posted By on Mon, Dec 16, 2013 at 11:17 AM

Last week, Scene broke the news that Cleveland's rock radio station, 87.7, is switching to Latin programming.

Since the station's announcement, Clevelanders as far south as Mansfield have boisterously voiced their disapproval.

According to a press release from the station's staff, "There have been more than 7,000 phone calls from shocked and disheartened listeners, 150,000 interactions on Facebook, a petition with over 2,400 signatures has been created by listeners to not switch formats and #SaveOurSound has been trending in Cleveland on Twitter,” Cellar Door Cleveland reports.

From the looks of things, 87.7 staffers are giving their station one more shot. Yesterday, the crew released a video calling SOS— Save Our Sound— and asking Clevelanders to donate canned food items for families in need. Each item donated will be counted as one vote toward saving the station's current rock 'n roll format.

Here's the video:

...and it’s what we love to do. From local politics and culture to national news that hits close to home, Scene Magazine has been keeping Cleveland informed for years.

It’s never been more important to support local news sources, especially as we all deal with the ramifications of the coronavirus pandemic. Almost everything Scene is about -- our stories, our events, our advertisers -- comes down to getting together. With events on hold, and no print distribution for the foreseeable future, every little bit helps.

A free press means accountability and a well-informed public, and we want to keep our unique and independent reporting available for many, many years to come.

If quality journalism is important to you, please consider a donation to Scene. Every reader contribution is valuable and so appreciated, and goes directly to support our coverage of critical issues and neighborhood culture. Thank you.
