There's a State-Sanctioned App for That: David Yost's Office Releases Anti-Fraud Tool for Smartphones

Lending even an iota of power to the people is always a welcome endeavor, especially when it comes from as high up as the state auditor’s office. That’s kinda what David Yost did when his office released the “Ohio Stops Fraud” app for iOS, which at press time was still unable to help you send pics of your junk to women.

The app opens with a minimalist design. Icons at the bottom lead you to the main controls: Report it, read it, find it (bop it, twist it, pull it). Reporting public fraud is done simply by filling out a number of prompts. The “read it” icon leads to what seems to be a litany of press releases from Yost’s office. “Find it” is a running archive of your own personal fraud reports and an active directory of investigators. Sorta like a public-interest Facebook timeline. (You can even add photos!)

“Now you’ve got an easy tool within just a few seconds to report it to someone who cares,” Yost says.

In one sense, the app calls to mind childhood fantasies of a universal remote control that mutes your parents and teachers - or pauses life at opportune moments. This one, however, targets the sort of slime that you and your parents and teachers elected to represent yourselves in the public sphere. It’s even more fun.

Is your city councilman brazenly defying open records laws? Is your mayor getting a bit too chummy with the budget books? Take a photo, record a video, or just jot down a few notes and send ‘em along to Yost and Co. The state auditor’s office will sift through all reports and follow up with due diligence. Everything sent in can be done so anonymously
