Sunday's Public Square Protest Showdown: Guns vs. Guitars

Sunday, rallyers wielding guns and rallyers wielding guitars will go head to head on Public Square in demonstrations for civil liberties.

Inspired by hundreds of musicians and music fans in Dallas, who protested the Open Carry gun movement on the Fourth of July, a grassroots Cleveland group will follow suit this weekend.

"Why drag a semi-automatic in a grocery store, when you can bring your KAZOO?!" Asks the Facebook invite. "How about a tin whistle? Or... even better... AIR GUITAR?"

Daniel McGraw, one of the event's organizers, says neither the Open Carry folks nor the guitarists have permits sanctioned by the city. (The Open Carry folks, according to McGraw, think they'll be protesting on Public Square's southwest quadrant, but a church group already has a permit there).

"So it looks like a sidewalk battle, or to see who can occupy the Tom L. Johnson quadrant first in gun/guitar battle," McGraw wrote in an email to Scene. "Revelry will ensue. Gordon Square hipsters with lattes fighting against Medina rifle guy."

The guidelines for the music rally, per the Facebook page, are as follows:

1. Bring your music-maker. Chime it, strike it, play it. ANYTHING! Classical musicians, folk artists, amatuers, rockers, singers, guitarists, kazoo virtuosos, woodwind players, drummer, whatever! Oh, and we'd like at least one didgeridoo.

2. Dress in your best "bandit" get-up. Be silly and have fun. We aren't going to take ourselves too seriously with this one.

3. This will be peaceful. We do not want a "mean" rally. We are NOT there to hate on anyone in support of open-carry gun laws, no matter how much we may disagree. Feel free to bring pro-music signage, but NOTHING hateful.
Oh beautiful, for spacious skies...
