Today, Cleveland will join the groundswell of trendy cities nationwide calling for more bike facilities and cyclist-oriented policy with an actual announcement.

That's right folks. At noon at Market Garden Brewery, a group of civic leaders, bar owners and private funders will officially launch Cleveland's first bike share program.

The bike share here, however, will feature only 34 cruisers at 6 locations throughout Ohio City and at the Superior viaduct. The NEOMG reports that Zagster, the Massachusetts-based company running the program, has until now focused exclusively on corporate and university settings. (They run the bike-share program at Dan Gilbert's Quicken Loans campus in Detroit, for example).

And at only $3 per hour,  the Zagster cruisers are a comparative steal. Ditto with the cost of implementation and upkeep. From the NEOMG:

With streamlined bike racks, onboard bike-locking technology and rentals accomplished with a phone app, Cleveland's system is expected to ring in at about one-fifth the per-bike cost of networks in New York and Boston that use expensive touchscreen kiosks and bulky docking stations.
The Cleveland bike share will also be the first in the country led and financed by the private sector. Bike enthusiasts and bar owners, plus a few token corporate backers, are leading the charge on this one. They're hoping this initial network is sort of just the tip of the iceberg, a "pilot program." They're hoping for expansion to other Cleveland neighborhoods and as many as 200 cruisers in the short term.
