Civil Service Union Puts Pressure on Corrections Department's Security Stance

Posted By on Mon, Sep 15, 2014 at 1:47 PM

With revelations that the Civil Service Employees Association warned the Allen-Oakwood Correctional Institution about security holes, TJ Lane's prison escape throws the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections into much tougher scrutiny.

“While we are proud of the team of Correction Officers and special teams that quickly apprehended the escapees last night, we have serious concerns about security at this facility and why more was not done after we warned DR&C officials about some major security risks,” Ohio Civil Service Employees Association President Christopher Mabe said late last week.

At issue are staffing levels (too low across the board) and mismatched security levels. Even more immediately, a union employee warned the prison last Wednesday that an escape attempt was imminent.

This morning's Sound of Ideas is a good one if you want to go deeper on this story.
