The New Fat Head's Brewery is about to Open ... in Portland

Posted By on Wed, Sep 24, 2014 at 9:11 AM

Have you heard the weird news? North Olmsted's colossal Fat Head's Brewery —home to the Bumbleberry blueberry ale and Head Hunter IPA — is opening a West Coast location in Portland, Oregon. (We reported on the baffling announcement last year).

The brewpub has been in the works for awhile, but it's now planning an opening as early as next month in Portland's brewtastic Pearl District. The PD's Marc Bona dutifully catalogued the differences and similarities between Ohio and Oregon in a column this morning.

"Now comes brewing's manifest destiny," Bona intoned.

Though Fat Head's brewmaster Matt Cole has assembled a rock star team of Midwestern brewers and barrel agers and whathaveyou, it remains to be seen whether or not this Rust Belt standby — Fat Head's was founded in Pittsburgh in '92 — can hang with the Oregon elite, recently ranked #1 for craft beer by the unimpeachable thrillist.com.

"Their flagship beer is an IPA," said a Portland journalist when we discussed the news in July. And indeed, Head Hunter and Bumbleberry are slated to be the "core beers" on tap. "Everyone's got an IPA. We've got enough IPAs."

(If Fat Head's were smart, they'd bottle and distribute their Hop Juju Imperial IPA to the northwest shelves. In Portland, after all, "Double IPA is the new IPA.")
