East Cleveland, which boasts local economic woes documented at length here and elsewhere, owes a Rhode Island traffic camera company $638,000 on a bill that's built up for years, the AP reports

Anyone driving through the inner-ring suburb can attest to the fact that traffic cameras litter the city's main streets. City Council members referred to the cameras earlier this year as major sources of revenue, contrasting them sharply against the city's dwindling tax base.

Calls placed by Scene to the city's law office — to ascertain literally anything about this alarming turn of events for East Cleveland — were not answered Wednesday afternoon.

From the AP:
The law director for East Cleveland said Wednesday the judge would not allow him to represent the city in the lawsuit. Ronald Riley says East Cleveland couldn't afford to hire outside counsel and won't be able to pay the judgment.
