Photographer Herb Ritts began taking shooting in the ’70s and quickly got gigs working for publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Interview and Rolling Stone. Ritts also created advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chanel, Donna Karan, Gap, Gianfranco Ferré, Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Levi's, Pirelli, Polo Ralph Lauren and Valentino.

After the music video revolution hit in the '80s, he directed numerous music videos and commercials. His work will be featured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s new exhibit, Herb Ritts: The Rock Portraits, which opens on Friday, March 13. The exhibit includes “30 never-before-seen photographs, original video footage, contact sheets with Ritts’ red-pencil markings, new video interviews and other well-known portraits from the revolutionary photographer and filmmakers’ collection.” The exhibit will also include a video with singer Chris Isaak, who talks about what it was like to work with Ritts on his video for the song “Wicked Game.”

In addition, visitors can see interviews with k.d. lang (she worked with Ritts on a Vanity Fair cover shoot) and with supermodel Cindy Crawford. Visitors will also be able to photograph themselves against a backdrop from one of Ritts’ most famous beach photos.

“We were given unprecedented access to the vast Ritts archives and the result is stunning,” says Greg Harris, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, in a press release. “This provocative exhibition is a testament to the visceral power of both photography and rock and roll. It is not to be missed.”

Expect to see photos of rock luminaries such as David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Cher, Tina Turner (pictured), Madonna and Prince.
