Citing a lack of simplicity and ease in state public records request processing, State Auditor David Yost says his office will now look into auditing requests that are initially denied.

“It’s fundamentally wrong that we should have a situation in Ohio where the government can stonewall a private citizen and force them to spend tens of thousands of dollars that they don’t have in order to get public records," he tells WKSU. In the event a citizen would like support in his or her fight to point out inaccuracies or obstacles in the request process, Yost's office will draft a "Sunshine Audit."

Outside of this new option, private citizens are often left taking the matter to court.
