While the theme of Friday’s overall event is “Walk” All Over Waterloo, the latest exhibition at Gallery One Sixty dreams of flying through the air. Kerry Lange’s Creatures of Flight opens with a reception this Friday, Apr. 10, from 5 p.m. to midnight.

"I've known Kerry for a long time, and have been following her work for years,” explains Gallery One Sixty owner Bryon Miller. “It is sort of like taking a chance on someone when you already know how amazing they are. I think she's going to surprise a lot of people with this show, or rather confirm what I, along with others already knew."

Lange found inspiration in humanity’s universal dreams of flight, as well as the anatomical and biological differences that separate us from “Creatures of Flight.”

"As creatures with only arms and legs, we are ultimately anatomically confined to a surface,” explains Lange. “A common dream humans have is the ability to fly. Some people describe these lucidities as to make one feel exhilarated, liberated and sometimes uneasy. It almost always evokes a sense of freedom. Dreaming about flight is both a common and liberating experience, a sense i was driven to explore. I think with the use of abounded colors and textures, I transmitted an energy in my creations that is perspicuous, exhilarating and lucid."

Lange’s combination of bold color and explosive texture create dynamic visual interest in her compositions of these imaginary creatures. As these works evolved, Lange began to examine the symbolism of her dreams of flight.

“This collection of works I created for Creatures of Flight will explore that sense of freedom and the sequential life stages of these winged beings,” she continues. “By honing in on vibrant colors and rich textures, I was able to give these creations an energy that is perspicuous. While creating these pieces I was pushed to dive deeper into the meaning and reasoning for flight, in dreams, and reality. Flight can change your location, view, options, and perception. It’s no wonder why this action frequents our dreams.”

Later in the evening, experimental local musicians We Can Never Leave will perform in the gallery. The exhibition and performance are free and open to the public.
