Zygote Press Features Student Work from Four Schools in '4U' Exhibit This Saturday

Each spring, Zygote Press showcases the work of the talented students and faculty of printmaking programs at four local universities — the Cleveland Institute of Art, Kent State University, University of Akron and a rotating “Wildcard” school. This year’s wildcard selection is Oberlin College. From 1 to 3 p.m. this Saturday, Apr. 11, Zygote will present an exhibition and open portfolio session in the gallery and demonstrations of printmaking techniques in the studio space.

4U showcases the range of printmaking through its various processes and techniques. The show allows the students a special opportunity to showcase their work outside of school before graduation. Additionally, Zygote and the students mutually benefit from the chance to network with each other. For roughly 20 years, Zygote Press has served as an unrivaled oasis for local and regional printmakers.

“This opportunity is essential for young artists, providing them with exposure for their work & giving them the opportunity to see the diversity of approaches being produced by their contemporary printmakers in other programs,” explains Professor of Printmaking at Kent State Michael Loderstedt. “Since we are a full service printmaking program (intaglio, lithography, serigraphy & relief as well as other experimental techniques) & the only graduate program in printmaking in Northeast Ohio, Zygote Press has become an extended classroom for our program at Kent State University. Fall 2015, we will also be moving into a brand new, purpose built space in our new Center for the Visual Arts building. We're very excited about the future of printmaking at Kent State University.”

In addition to the gallery exhibition, students are invited to bring a more extensive collection of work to an open portfolio session. During the afternoon, students will have the opportunity to discuss their work with artists, art patrons, fellow students, art professionals and faculty from other schools.

“The Zygote 4U Event is a long standing opportunity for students to engage with a professional organization to exhibit and promote their work and themselves,” says Maggie Denk-Leigh, Associate Professor and Printmaking Department Chair at Cleveland Institute of Art. “As students, it goes a long way for them to have both commitment and support of an active arts organization (especially directly related to their field) be invested in their professional development and futures. The relationship is wonderful and the opportunities are an excellent support of the program at CIA.”

For the public, 4U is an opportunity to learn more about printmaking, the universities and the artists themselves.

Can’t get enough printmaking? Why not make a day of it? Stop by the Cleveland Museum of Art’s current temporary exhibition, Fresh Prints” The Nineties to Now. It’s open until 5 p.m. on Saturday. Afterwards, from 6 to 9 p.m., visit SPACES Monster Drawing Rally to see Zygote’s own Liz Maugans, Corrie Slawson and Christi Birchfield creating new work with 100 other local and regional artists.

4U is one day only, Saturday, Apr. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
