From the late 1970s until 2005, Cleveland photographer Kevin D. Carmont, who had been in a band with Anton Fier (Golden Palominos) and Mike Terrell (Wild Giraffes), photographed local acts such as Styrenes, Pere Ubu, Foreign Bodies, Jim Jones, Dave E. with the Cool Marriage Counselors (pictured), Golden Palominos, the Wild Giraffes and Wally Bryson. His first “published” image was of Dave E. (best known as a member of the Electric Eels) in an issue of CLE magazine.

Kevin D. Carmont: Listen to these Pictures, a new exhibit of his work that opens on May 1 at Space: Rock gallery, includes a selection of his photos, including shots from the July 4 beach party at the Hanna mansion in Bratenahl where the Cramps and Pere Ubu played for about 100 guests (including Plain Dealer rock writer Jane Scott). The exhibit also includes photos of Talking Heads playing at Finney Chapel and Bernie and the Invisibles performing at the old Coach House. “I began working by just heading into uncharted territories by saying yes to most anyone that simply asked,” says Carmont in a press release. “The DIY Cleveland music scene work ethic was going full steam. I created graphics and took pictures whenever/wherever I could. The print and photo imagery helped fellow musicians/artists present themselves to the public. The working conditions under which this happened were less than ideal. The bands were experimenting and so was I. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it was a horrifyingly blank.”

The exhibit's opening reception takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday, May 1.
