Browns Among NFL Teams Paid By Department of Defense for Patriotic Ceremonies

Posted By on Mon, May 11, 2015 at 11:22 AM

NJ.com published an interesting collection of data today, revealing that the U.S. Department of Defense has spent $5.4 million to fund patriotic ceremonies and various advertising contracts with 14 NFL teams. The Browns are listed among the records.

In 2011 and 2012, the U.S. Department of Defense paid the Cleveland Browns $22,500 for Air Force ceremonies at the stadium. (Former QB Brandon Weeden notably got caught beneath the American flag during the 2012 event, and we'd argue that that memory alone is actually well worth the federal tax expenditure.)

The Browns, it should be pointed out, have been paid far less than most other NFL teams with Defense contracts.

The data release comes after Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican, criticized the New Jersey Army National Guard for spending $377,500 in multiple campaigns with the New York Jets.
