$5-Million Knight Foundation Gift to Bring National Center for Choreography to Akron

Posted By on Fri, May 15, 2015 at 10:53 AM

Akron will be home to only the second center for choreography in the U.S., thanks to a $5-million gift from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and a partnership between the University of Akron and DANCECleveland.

The center will bring unparalleled resources — space, people, experience — to the university, which is sure to attract a new corner of its prospective student base in the years to come.

"Just having that national presence and having those national choreographers in the studio is just enormous," Neil Sapienza, associate dean of the university's college of arts and sciences, said.

Check out a video reel of top choreographers' work in Northeast Ohio below.

“The next generation of great American choreographers needs space and time to develop the craft and to explore the full potential of the creative process,” Alberto Ibargüen, president of Knight Foundation, said via press release this week. “The new National Center for Choreography at The University of Akron will fill that need, building on the resources of northeast Ohio to create the works that inspire tomorrow’s audiences.”
