That’s the theme of this month’s CreativeMorning CLE presentation by R.A. Washington, writer, community activist and founder/director of Guide to Kulchur: Text, Art & News in the Detroit Shoreway. At 8:30 a.m. Friday, June 19, he’ll present his talk, The Question of Revolution: Personal Politics, Identity and Grassroots Organizing in Post Riot Cities.

“Increasingly our social media driven interaction creates a self-centric life, we become just removed from what is happening, and respond to the world in clicks, likes and what have you,” describes Washington. “So our concept of community lacks a physical landscape, and creates a digital empathy that doesn't serve us. This digital empathy, coupled with our wanting to matter makes it extremely challenging to build across identities — it makes us less likely to be effective allies.”

Last year, Washington received a Creative Workforce Fellowship from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture (CPAC). His presentation asks: “How does the question of identity inform our understanding of community and how does the historical landscape effect how we organize?”

“Before there can truly be a sort of digital grassroots organizing we must attend to those of us that feel pinched by a day to day reality,” continues Washington. “'How will I eat, how will I feed my kids, how do I improve their education, how do I improve mine?' These questions become so heavy, so minute-to-minute that many of our city's population do not have the time to consider the possibilities of community. They are trying to live.”

The setting will be outside Fairmount Creamery. For the first time, CreativeMornings CLE is hosting its event outdoors (weather permitting). As always, guests will receive complimentary coffee and breakfast.

“This particular event is the first that we’re holding outdoors, fingers crossed for a beautiful morning to watch the sun rise over the skyline,” explains CreativeMornings CLE organizer Thomas Fox. “Breakfast at CreativeMornings always comes together through a partnership with Phoenix Coffee and Edible Cleveland. This month we’ll have fresh bagels from Cleveland Bagel Co. There’s likely to be more; the ladies at Edible always seem to surprise me with more than we could have asked for. Many other sponsors help to facilitate the event as well, typically different creative and educational businesses. This month Twist Creative, Web Machine, Cleveland Public Library, Consolidated Solutions, and Parse & Parcel are all supporting to make CreativeMornings possible.”

The talk is free, but online registration is required.
