CD Release Party Planned for ‘Music of the Market II’

Since its inception nine years ago, the Kamm’s Corners Farmers market has sought to offer more than just local fruits and veggies.

“From the beginning, we considered music one of the three legs,” says organizer Steve Lorenz. “One is fresh and healthy food and the second has been music and the third has been some healthy outreach to the neighborhood. Music keeps it as a lively place. We want it to be the town square for Sundays in West Park.”

“Attending this market, I can see how the music sets the tone and adds to the shopping experience,” says Lisa Sweeney, who’s recently come on board as one of the market’s organizers.

In 2011, market organizers issued Music of Market, a CD featuring many of the local artists who have performed at the market. Now, a second CD is on the way.

“It’s a fundraiser for the farmers market and helps ensure we can offer great music,” says Lorenz. “It’s a chance to thank our vendors. It’s a celebration of the market in general. The musicians donate these songs. It’s original music you can’t find anywhere else. You won’t find a collection of music like this. People tell us they listen to it all the time. It’s a unique group with diverse types of music. We have jazz and Americana and country and rock n roll. It’s like putting a player on shuffle mode.”

Locals contributing to this Music of the Market II include Alex Bevan, Wallace Coleman, Hollywood Slim Trio, Jim Volk, Brand New Hat, Cats on Holiday, Jeff Varga, Pete Cavano, Jeff Sherman, Laura Varcho, Diana Chittester, Kristen Graves, Smokin' Fez Monkeys, Dave Thomas and more.

“We have returning people but some new ones to keep it fresh,” says Lorenz, who helps book the acts that play the market.

From 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, P.J. McIntyre’s Irish Pub hosts a special CD release party for Music of the Market II. A CD discount is included with the ticket, and there will be LIVE music, door prizes and a 50-50 raffle. Twenty percent of dinner and drink bills will be donated to the market.
