Here's a Fucking Map

We're suckers for data-driven maps, and that holds true especially when they involve curse words.

This one comes via Gawker, which helpfully laid out maps from research done by Jack Grieve, a Forensic Linguistics professor at Aston University in England. The goal was to see which parts of the country use certain vulgarities the most, so Grieve mined the best source for unfettered swearing: Twitter. Specifically, Twitter between October 2013 and November 2014.

The nitty gritty, again, via Gawker:

For any word (e.g. fuck) we measure its relative frequency in each county by diving the total number of occurrences of that word in that county by the total number of words in that county.

We take that raw map and smooth it using a hot spot analysis (a Getis-Ord Gi local spatial autocorrelation analysis).

We map the Getis-Ord z-scores to identify clusters. Specifically, a high z-score means that that county is in the midst of a region where that word is relatively common, a negative z-score means that that county is in the midst of counties where that word is less common.

The Cleveland area was big on fuck, as well as cunt. While "gosh" and "darn" are the sort of words that only your 6-year-old niece thinks are bad, they were tallied too, and we don't tweet those bitches much (which is another word, along with shit, that Cleveland ranked low for).
