LeBron James — he of the Akron-centric philanthropy — announced this week a new plan to send students involved with his "I Promise" program to four years of college on full-ride scholarships.

The LeBron James Family Foundation and the University of Akron are still working out the details, but the new scholarship program will cover tuition and service fees ($9,500 or so).

As of earlier this year, the LJFF student program had 800 kids involved; they expect 1,000 by this upcoming school year. To qualify for the scholarship, students will have to graduate from an Akron public high school and hit certain standard testing requirements. There will also be a community service requirement baked into the criteria.

The AP also reports that U of A will immediately rename its education department the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education.
