If you've ever wondered — and by that we mean, if in the last 7 days you've wondered — who the hell is inside Buddie, the mascot trotted out by ResponsibleOhio, the group behind Issue 3, well, the Cincinnati Enquirer has the answer for you.

Buddie is played by 26-year-old Ericka Buford, a Columbus actor who says that she thinks Buddie is pretty chill, even though at first she wasn't exactly sure that Buddie really screamed "marijuana." (One Twitterer, we forget who, noted the costume looked like something you would use Mucinex on, but that's besides the point.)

When she first saw the costume, “my first thought was: asparagus,” Buford said. “I’ve seen my share of buds, and they don’t look like this.”

Anyway, here's how she breaks down Buddie's demeanor. Real method stuff here.

The response at Buddie’s unveiling, Buford said, was concern from adults for the Joe Camel effect: that superhero-loving kids would think that Buddie was encouraging them to use marijuana.

“I can understand that,” Buford said, “and my feeling is, why fix what’s not broken? We have a lot of people who understand what we’re trying to do with legalization, and they’re in favor. I do worry that with Buddie, we come across as more in your face.”

But in digging into the character, Buford said she has found Buddie “to be chill. People are going to be upset, but Buddie’s just going to put in his iPod. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but I’m going to do what needs to be done.”
