As part of this Friday’s Walk All Over Waterloo event, Article Gallery hosts an opening reception for From the Dust, a group show by local artists celebrating Cleveland’s renaissance while embracing its industrial roots. From the Dust is curated by Rachel Latina, who was inspired by the work of her fellow resident artists at Article. Article has three resident artists in its studios, and a fourth is on the way.

“The city has a long and famous industrial history and we see the remnants of it every day on our daily commute,” says Rachel Latina, Article’s resident artist and curator of From the Dust. “It’s in our faces and as part of the city’s revival, we’ve come to embrace it. We rise from the ashes, we repurpose and we rebuild.”

From the Dust includes work by Christine Irene Cotter, Larry Fielder, Patrick Haggerty, Leila Khoury, George Kriner, Rachel Latina, Nancy L Miller, Jessica Miroglotta, Kristopher Petrenko, Louis Ross, Susan Ross, Jerry Schmidt, Melodie Thompson, Guerin Wolf and Theresa Yondo.

Sculptor George Kriner, who will be featured in the show, repurposes scrap materials into his own creations. “I’ve been collecting ‘junk metal’ for awhile. I spend a lot of time pondering what I can make out of it, and then it’s just a matter of welding it together. I’ve been welding for close to 20 years now; the art started about 5-6 years ago.”

“I have been doing this re-envisioned form of art for many, many years,” says Larry Fielder, another of Article’s resident artists. Using raw materials, Fielder creates functional objects; such as drafting tables, lamps and sculptures. “I never knew it had a name or much less a following for that matter. I love the repurposing of all things industrial. If there is a story that goes with the ‘find or build’ that I can pass on that’s even better.”

From the Dust opens this Friday, Sept. 4 with a reception from 6 to 10 p.m.

“Article is both a gallery and studio space for emerging artists to experience a professional working environment outside of their home,” Louis Ross states. “They are also encouraged to develop and curate art exhibitions and invitational shows. A teaching art room for community outreach is the next phase of development of the space.”
