New Sounds of Silent Series Returns to the Nightlight Cinema

Posted By on Thu, Nov 5, 2015 at 4:36 PM

Last year, more than 20 area musicians teamed up to write, perform and record segments of a new soundtrack for an old silent film showing at the Nightlite Cinema in Akron. Dubbed Sounds of Madness, this year’s incarnation of the event comes to the theater for two shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.

This year’s film, the 1926 Japanese movie A Page of Madness, tells the story of a janitor who works in an asylum. Many of the contributing musicians will be present in the audience for the screening. In addition, the Nightlight Cinema will screen last year's program, Sonic Offerings to the Queen of Mars. That screening kicks off at 4 p.m. with a live performance by Akron's Real • Edge • Dance Company.

"Delivering another entry in our 'New Sounds of Silents' series is always a treat," says Nightlight Executive Director, Kurtiss Hare in a press release. "Jacob Trombetta – who's consistently used his skill and discerning ear to organize these musicians – he's been a great creative collaborator. Steve Felix, our multi-talented board president, lines everything up and cuts together a final theatrical experience that is always so compelling. Not only do these musicians bring new life to these silent films, but they tune us into the life that's always been there… in the images. Watching silent films reminds us that images convey meaning and story on their own. Understanding that is the gateway to a whole new realm of experiences at the cinema."

Tickets to both Sounds of Madness and Sonic Offerings to the Queen of Mars are available for pre-purchase through the Nightlight's website, where a full list of participating musicians can also be found.
