Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon Has Emergency Heart Procedure

Posted By on Fri, Feb 5, 2016 at 3:39 PM

Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon is recovering at St. Vince Charity Medical Center after an emergency heart procedure Thursday, Cleveland Catholic Diocese spokesmen said.

Lennon, 68, experienced chest pains Thursday morning and was rushed to St. Vincent, where he underwent a heart catheterization. The Diocese made clear that Lennon did not suffer a heart attack, but that he has had heart issues in the past and Lennon's doctors are based at St. Vincent.

The procedure was a routine one, and Lennon's issues were detected immediately. He's resting comfortably and should be released from the hospital's care soon.

Per the diocese, he's grateful for prayers.

Lennon has been the Bishop in Cleveland since Anthony Pilla's retirement in 2006. He remains something of a divisive figure in the community, having spearheaded the controversial shuttering and clustering of neighborhood parishes in 2009.

Prior to coming to Cleveland, Lennon served under Bernard Law — depicted in the Oscar-nominated film Spotlight — during the Boston priest sex abuse scandal.

Scene spent a day with Lennon in 2013 to get a sense of what his job was like. We found him to be a pleasant, principled, supremely busy man.
