Accomplished architect and designer Mark Yager passed away peacefully last Saturday at the age of just 55 after a long battle with brain and neck cancer. Yager studied architecture at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in 1985. His recent projects included the beautiful redesign of the Hyatt Regency at the Arcade's parking garage fa├žade.

Perhaps his biggest contribution to the community were his efforts in helping owner Dan Bush convert 78th Street Studios, which was originally the Baker Electric Motor Vehicle Company in 1905 before housing American Greetings' Creative Studios through the 80s, into a 170,000 square feet "Art Maze" of galleries, artist studios, performance spaces and music recording studios.

"Mark was involved with 78th Street Studios from almost the very beginning 15 years ago, as my architect for five years and then as in-house design consultant and close friend," reflects Dan Bush. "His amazing talent touched every square foot of the building and has made it a far more special place that it would have been without him. He will be missed enormously. Every colleague of the 78th Street Studios owes a debt of gratitude to the tireless enthusiasm and talents that Mark Yager brought our remarkable arts center here, as it grew and matured over the last 15 years. We all have lost a wonderful friend and an outstanding architect and designer. Well done, Mark. Rest in peace."

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at 2116 Dover Center Road in Westlake. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations be made to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, 9500 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, 44195 or online.

Stop by 78th Street Studios for March's Third Friday open house event from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 18, to admire Yager's efforts.
