The Capitol Theater will screen David Lynch's iconic 1986 film noir / psychological thriller Blue Velvet for one week, beginning Friday, April 29.

The film has been digitally restored on the occasion of its 30th anniversary.

Blue Velvet stars a baby-faced Kyle Maclachlan, who would later appear in Lynch's TV series Twin Peaks, Laura Dern (Jurassic Park), Isabella Rossellini, and Dennis Hopper, in a career-defining role, as sadomasochistic pimp Frank Booth.

Booth, whose patois has been generously sampled for decades, and whose gas-inhaling antics have long been the stuff of truly freaky domestic nightmares, ranks #36 on the American Film Institute's list of the top 50 movie villains of all time. It's an unforgettable performance.

If you're unfamiliar with the film, Blue Velvet is quintessential Lynch, literally peeling back the curtain of small-town America. The small town here is Lumberton, North Carolina. Nebbish undergrad Jeffrey Beaumont has returned home after his father suffers a stroke and stumbles upon a severed ear while walking home from the hospital.

Beaumont decides to pursue the mystery of the ear himself, snooping in the apartment of local lounge singer Dorothy Vallens (Rossellini) and witnessing the sadistic bi-polarism of the criminal boss Booth, all while a personal romance blossoms with the local police detective's daughter.

It's a must-see film, a masterwork of mood and small-town intrigue. It's cited by many publications as one of the greatest films of the 1980s and one of the greatest mystery films ever made.
