This past Saturday evening, May 7, a 12-year-old boy was shot in the knee, on the porch outside his home on East 66th Street, as a victim of a drive-by shooting.

On Sunday, May 8, another 13-year-old boy was shot in the back as he sat inside his grandmother’s home on East 153rd Street, due to drive-by gunfire.

Both shooters remain unknown and there are still no arrests; cars from both incidents sped away immediately after they opened fire. Cleveland police are claiming that the two incidents are unrelated. The boys were both taken to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital to be treated for their gun wounds. While the 13-year-old boy was reported as stable, the condition of the 12-year-old still remains unknown as of Monday afternoon.

The steady rise of gun violence in cities like Cleveland remains a complicated problem for law enforcement. Just this past October, four Cleveland children died from gun wounds in just one month, two involving drive-by shootings: Major Howard, 3 years old, and Aavielle Wakefield, 5 months old.

According to a Yale University study, approximately 20 children nationwide are sent to the hospital each day due to be treated for gunshot wounds. The study also found that nearly one-third of child gunshot acts are unintentional. Looking specifically at Ohio, last year’s report released by the Ohio Department of Health showed that Ohio has one of the worst infant mortality rates. Ohio’s rate of 7.4 deaths per 1,000 births is 23 percent higher than the national rate.

America’s gun violence problem isn’t slowing down.

Motives remain unknown for both boys’ tragic shootings this weekend.
