The old "don't take free ice cream from strangers" rule remains in effect this summer, but you can accept the sweet treat from Cleveland Police officers.

This summer, they're launching a "Let's Chill Together" campaign, providing free ice cream for children in local neighborhoods courtesy of Cleveland's own Pierre's.

Kicking off yesterday, when Cleveland weather just started to heat up, the ice cream effort will last for the rest of the summer season.

The Cleveland Police Foundation is sponsoring the event along with Pierre's, and will give the local police force an opportunity to get out in the community and "[take] time to visit all summer long," according to their blog.

Like last year, 2017 marks another "Safe Summer" for the city. The initiative, which Mayor Frank Jackson spoke about on Saturday, is meant to keep Cleveland adolescents safe and occupied during the summer with activities like swimming and sports, and now encompasses "Chill Together" as well.

So the next time you hear the familiar jingle of a nearby ice cream truck, watch out, it just might be the Cleveland Police with some complimentary summer treats.
