Three large cycles of performances — ChamberFest Cleveland, ENCORE Chamber Music, and Ohio Light Opera — are set to launch this week.

Diana and Franklin Cohen’s imaginative ChamberFest Cleveland begins its 11-concert cycle of concerts on Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 pm in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music. “Cycles — Phases” features music by J.S. Bach, John Adams, and Edward Elgar.

On Friday the 16th at 8:30 pm, the festivities move to the Bop Stop for Arnold Schoenberg’s Cabaret Songs, George Benjamin’s Viola, Viola (yep, a piece for two violas), original works by Xavier Foley, and live improvisations by pianists Andrius Zlabys and Roman Rabinovich.

On Saturday the 17th at 7:30 pm in Harkness Chapel at CWRU, “Recycle” will feature works arranged from or inspired by other pieces. The menu includes Schnittke, Fauré, and Schubert.

And next Tuesday the 20th at 8:30 pm, mezzo-soprano Lauren Eberwein, violinists Alexi Kenney and Yura Lee, and filmmaker Kasumi will take on György Kurtág’s Kafka Fragments at Transformer Station in Hingetown. Seating is limited for two of these performances. Better reserve your seats online.

Jinjoo Cho’s ENCORE Chamber Music opens its second season at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills with a concert by the Jasper String Quartet on Friday, June 16 at 7:00 pm. The program includes Beethoven’s Quartets Op. 18, No. 2 and Op. 131 and György Ligeti’s Quartet No. 1, alias “Métamorphoses nocturnes.” Then on Sunday, June 18 at 2:00 pm, ENCORE’s first “Sunday Unplugged” concert — leave your electronic devices in the car — will feature the Jupiter and Cavani String Quartets and Jinjoo Cho in music by Shostakovich, Piazzolla, and Brahms. Come early for coffee and dessert at 1:00 pm. Tickets can be reserved online.

This year’s special guests at the Kent State Piano Institute are the Anderson Roe Piano Duo. On Friday, June 16 at 7:30 pm, Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Joy Roe will dazzle you with music for two pianos by Busoni (recycling a Mozart concerto movement) and Rachmaninoff (his Suite No. 1), and a slew of the Duo’s own arrangements of pieces by Piazzolla, Brahms, Freddie Mercury, Dvořák, Grieg, Schubert, and Lennon & McCartney. The performance in Ludwig Recital Hall at KSU is free.

Finally, Ohio Light Opera opens its 2017 season in Freedlander Theater at the College of Wooster on Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 pm with Meredith Willson’s The Music Man. Six more openings will follow until all seven musicals and operettas are playing in repertoire, including Anything Goes, H.M.S. Pinafore, Primrose, The Student Prince, Countess Maritza, and The Lady of the Slipper (a modern Cinderella). Tickets available online.
