Children exposed to domestic violence are placed at a higher risk for developing behavioral, mental, social and physical problems, which comes at a price, emotional and in literal dollars and cents. According to estimates by Case Western, the lifetime cost of this issue is around $2.2 billion, due to increased demand for health care, higher crime rates and productivity loss.

The research showed variation in the number cases and treatment options from county-to-county, highlighting the need for strong, universal support services. Of the 168,000 children exposed in 2016, the report found only half received help.

"We hope these findings speak to policymakers and help them make informed decisions about preventive and therapeutic services,” lead researcher Megan Holmes said. “This is about the future of Ohio’s children and the adults they’ll become, which will shape our state and its economy for decades.”

As part of the study, the research team published a report of suggestions to combat this issue. Though there is no clear solution, the report suggests implementing programs about teen dating violence and keeping educators knowledgable about how to handle domestic violence situations.
