Morgan Conservatory Will Celebrate 10 Years with Farm-to-Table Feast

Since its founding 10 years ago, the Morgan Art of Papermaking Conservatory & Educational Foundation (better known as the Morgan Conservatory, or simply the Morgan) has risen to an international destination for artists, bookmakers and papermakers. At 15,000 sq. ft. (and an acre garden), the Morgan Conservatory is the largest arts center in America specifically dedicated to every aspect of papermaking, book arts and letterpress printing. The Morgan serves as a working studio, formal exhibition space with 85-ft. double-wall gallery, gathering place for the community, educational hub and source of some of the finest handmade paper in the world.

In honor of both the organization’s 10-year anniversary and its founder and artistic director Tom Balbo, the Morgan Conservatory hosts a Farm to Table Feast from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 15. The event will be hosted outdoors with live art demonstrations and music in the Sam Carboolad Garden. In celebration of the organization’s 10-year anniversary, the Morgan’s Sam Caraboolad Garden was expanded into a second lot, doubling its size this spring. Also planned are improvements to the garden’s entryway, signage and a new water conservation system and a garden pavilion for workshops, community events and the annual Kozo harvest.

“It’s exciting to hear the new plans for the garden and that we’ll have a structure to host workshops in,” says board member and Benefit Chair Tony Williams. “It’s a nice opportunity to expand the facility and be involved in nature and the process of making and dyeing paper. We don’t always think about where our materials come from. We are used to going to the store and picking up a pack of paper, and this is very different; this paper looks and feels different”



A Cleveland-based artist producing work for more than 30 years, Tom Balbo has dedicated his life to preserving the art of traditional papermaking, and was instrumental to the establishment of the Morgan Conservatory. He continues to help steer it into the future as its artistic director. Balbo received his BA from Baldwin Wallace University in 1977, as well as his MFA in Studio Arts at Syracuse University in 1980.

An opening cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. includes seasonal craft cocktails created by Watershed Distillery and wine tastings from local Chateau Hough Vineyards. At 7 p.m., dinner will be accompanied by music from the Glenn Holmes Jazz Quartet. The event includes tasting stations by Edwins Leadership & Restaurant Institute, Fire Food & Drink, Flying Fig, Sterle’s Country House and more to be announced. All tastings feature local and homegrown products highlighting neighborhood gardens, farms and vineyards.

“The Farm to Table Feast is going to be a rustic down to earth event,” says Williams. “It’s an opportunity to escape in the middle of the city in the garden”
