Story Club originated in Chicago, but made its way to Cleveland in late 2015, thanks to Dana Norris who left the windy city for the rust belt — in fact, she's reviewed myriad things Clevelanders do from the perspective of a city newbie. Currently, Norris hosts her monthly Story Club events at Bottlehouse Brewing Company, but is now expanding to the west side at Forest City Brewery.

But offering a new location requires more work and extra help. So Norris asked photographer Laura Wimbels, known for her faces of Cleveland project, to help co-host.

"It's very real in a way you don't see day-to-day, you get to learn something intimate about a stranger," Norris told

The event, which was voted "best new bar event" by Thrillist Cleveland, features two paid performers and three volunteer guests who wish to share a true story. They are given eight minutes or roughly 1300 words. If more than three people sign up, then names are drawn out of a hat. At the end of the show, the audience votes for their favorite story with the winner ending up in Story Club Magazine.

Norris has some advice for potential storytellers, saying to, "The best story is about the time you made an awful mistake. There's built-in drama. There needs to be something at stake. The audience needs to be a little worried for you."

The next east side Story Club starts tomorrow at 7 p.m. A $10 donation is suggested, which will go to Camp Paradise, a summer camp for adults who are handicapped. The first west side event takes place on Wednesday, July 12 and also starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds from that show will go to the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center.
