Pope Francis today named Nelson J. Perez as the new bishop of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. He comes to Northeast Ohio from Rockville Centre, New York, where he has been serving as auxiliary bishop since 2012.

Perez's designation comes months after former Bishop Richard Lennon retired from the post, citing a vascular dementia diagnosis.

Mass is being celebrated this afternoon at St. John Cathedral, where Perez will deliver the homily. A formal installation ceremony will take place Sept. 5 at the church.

“I am so very happy to be here with you, to learn from you, grow with you and serve you with pastoral devotion,” Perez said this morning as the news was announced.

Toledo Bishop Daniel Thomas will continue to serve in an administrative capacity in Cleveland until September.
