Graffiti HeArt Partners With 3-19 Coffee to Give Local Java a Colorful, Cleveland Flavor

Just days after helping create a new mural in Gordon Square, local nonprofit organization Graffiti HeArt announced another exciting collaboration between Cleveland artists and local businesses. In the coming weeks, 3-19 Coffee Cleveland will be available at local retailers and online in reusable tins featuring colorful labels showcasing original artwork by Cleveland-based artists. Although locals already have several options for local coffee roasters, this is the first time that an entire line of coffee is being branded with artwork by local artists. Rather than using one artist or designer to create all the labels, 3-19 allows customers to choose their favorite artwork, as well as their favorite type of coffee.

For this special project, Graffiti HeArt and 3-19 have picked artwork by the Rust Belt Monster Collective (Randy Crider, James Giar, Erin Schechtman-Caruso, Tim Switalski and Craig Worrell), Don’t Panic! collaborators Rich Cihlar and Bob Peck, Garret Weider and a Hands Across the Community mural featuring thousands of painted handprints of participants and visitors from around the world during the Gay Games 9 in Cleveland in 2014, Graffiti HeArt’s first event as an organization. Donated after GG9, the mural was gifted to and installed at the LGBT Community Center of Cleveland. Three of these labels feature local landmarks and Cleveland imagery, but all of them have deep connections to the city.

The partnership between Graffiti HeArt and 3-19 Coffee began during a chance meeting between Graffiti HeArt’s founder and president Stamy Paul and 3-19 Coffee co-founder Mike Vehar, a native of Cleveland. Meeting at a Graffiti HeArt Graffiti & Grapes Fundraiser at CLE Urban Winery in Cleveland Heights, the two discussed the goals of their organizations and quickly agreed that their missions should align. “This has been a wonderful partnership thus far, and we are excited to build up this brand in Cleveland given tie to arts and community,” Paul says. “Our missions are very aligned."

Elaborating on their new partnership, Vehar adds, "When we first met and discussed the goals of each of our organizations, I knew that Graffiti HeArt would be a perfect partnership for 3-19 Coffee Cleveland. Each coffee tin sale not only supports our coffee farmers, it supports local artists and the Graffiti HeArt art scholarships for students. We want to always contribute to social good in the areas we source and sell our coffee. We try to be approachable and artistic with our brand. We partner with artists and commission their artwork to showcase on our coffee tins. In Cleveland, we partnered with Graffiti Heart to promote her organization and art in Cleveland. We roast specialty coffee on a relationship-based green coffee sourcing model. Our goal is to work directly with small lot farmers. For example, we have exclusivity with a small lot farm in Honduras and the 2017 crop just arrived. In Honduras, we are sponsoring an art program for the youth of the community "

These new Cleveland-themed coffee tins will be available in the coming weeks at businesses such as: Cleveland Clothing Company, Lake Road Market, Passengers Cafe, The Grocery, CLE Urban Winery and In the 216, with more locations being added as 3-19 Coffee Cleveland continues to establish itself throughout the city. If the project is successful, 3-19 Coffee Cleveland hopes to include more artists in the future.

3-19 Coffee has founders based in Cleveland and San Francisco, each working to establish the company’s brand in their respective cities. In addition to showcasing artwork by local artists in each city, 3-19 Coffee aims to support each part of the supply chain, from small farming communities where the coffee is grown to the artists showcased on their packaging.

Graffiti HeArt has helped facilitate numerous mural projects throughout Northeast Ohio; at schools such as CMSD’s Campus International School, as well as Crocker Park, Tyler Village, Dealer Tire, Airgas and more. Additionally, Graffiti HeArt sponsored Victor Ving’s Greetings from Cleveland mural in Ohio City and helped find a home for a #WaterIsLife mural during the height of the DAPL debate. Both murals were part of part of projects in several cities, linking Cleveland’s public art to cities across the U.S. However, there is an even more altruistic purpose at the “heart” of the organization’s mission. Graffiti HeArt’s projects help fund scholarships for aspiring young artists to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art’s Pre-College Program, a summer program for high school students to take college-level art and design classes. Originally awarding two full scholarships in 2015, the organization has increased the number of scholarships every year since, awarding nine this summer. In total, Graffiti HeArt has provided more than $25,000 in scholarships to CIA’s Pre-College Program.
