The family and friends of Karl Hoerig have waited a decade for the wheels of justice to spin in their favor. Yesterday brought good news on that front.

Claudia Hoerig, who fled to Brazil in 2007 after allegedly murdering her husband — a crime featured in a 2011 Scene cover story — was finally extradited back to the United States and arrested in Trumbull County.

Authorities for years had worked to bring Hoerig back to American soil. Brazil forbids extradition of its citizens for non-drug cases. The country had revoked her citizenship in 2013 and arrested her in 2016, both in efforts to pave the way for her eventual appearance in a courtroom to answer to the charges. U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan was among those most fervently working on the efforts. The FBI had placed her on its Most Wanted List.

In March 2007, Hoerig — a decorated U.S. Air Force pilot and all-around great guy — was found shot dead in his home in Newton Falls, a small town outside Warren. Police immediately had a suspect: Hoerig had become estranged from his wife after a rocky and strange marriage. He was looking to get out. Claudia wasn't interested in letting him go. The final weeks of the marriage were an accelerating tailspin that ended with Hoerig's murder.
