The Jewish Federation of Cleveland, together with local synagogues, agencies and organizations, will celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence with a series of community-wide arts and cultural and educational events.

Dubbed Israel at 70, the series will celebrate the history, heritage and culture of Israel and the Jewish people.

“We’re excited to mark this milestone anniversary through a wide range of programs that include lectures, theater, art exhibits, and much more,” says Renny Wolfson, co-chair of the Federation’s Israel at 70 committee, in a press release announcing the schedule of events.

“This year, we will hold two separate events this year in honor of Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel’s Independence Day,” adds co-chair Mitch Frankel in reference to a concert featuring Israeli rock star David Broza and the first-ever Israel Fest!

The series kicks off on March 20 with a lecture that takes place at 7 p.m. at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Great Lakes Science Center President and CEO Kirsten Ellenbogen will moderate a panel discussion on the current role of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), both locally and in Israel.

Then, at 7:30 p.m. on April 19 at Landerhaven, Broza and up-and-coming Israeli rock/pop singers Tamar Eisenman and Maya Isac will perform as part of the Federation's Yom Ha'atzmaut Celebration.

At 7:30 p.m. on April 26 at Fuchs Mizrachi School, Ambassador Dani Dayan, Consul General of Israel in New York, will speak at the 114th Annual Meeting of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland

Another highlight will be the first-ever IsraelFest!, an event that’ll feature an afternoon of shopping, food and dancing at the Israeli marketplace. It takes place on May 6 at Mandel JCC’s Safran Park.

And finally, the series concludes with the American debut of On the Grill. The play offers an “intimate look at the hopes and heartbreak, feelings and fears of an Israeli family and the community that surrounds them as they prepare for an Independence Day party at their home.” It opens on June 21 at the Dobama Theatre. It’ll run through July 8.
