Yesterday, Akron City Council voted to increase the legal age for tobacco purchase from 18 to 21.

Councilwoman, Linda Omobien sponsored the legislation, and with the majority of the votes in favor, teens are now going to be road tripping to other cities for their cancer sticks.

“I’m proud that, tonight, Akron City Council joined me in choosing a healthier future for our next generation,” Mayor Dan Horrigan told FOX 8. “While I respect opinions on all sides of this issue, I know this legislation puts Akron on the right side of history.”

This is a good effort to reduce tobacco use in teens, but much like alcohol, if someone under 21 wants it, they'll ask their older friends or the mysterious guy on the corner.

Other cities, such as Cleveland, have already passed similar laws.
