The Humane Society released its annual Horrible Hundred report this week and, once again, Ohio finds itself with the ignominious distinction of being home to the second-most puppy mills in the country (13) behind only Missouri (23) featured on the list.

“Over the 12-month period since we published our last report, USDA inspectors have continued to find conditions just as horrific as those in our prior reports, including dogs with open wounds, emaciated dogs with their ribs and spines showing, and dogs with moldy food, dirty water and filthy cages," the report's introduction says.

The stories are hard to read and run the gamut from unsanitary living conditions to general mistreatment of animals to stunning details like one woman who neutered dogs without a vet present and without anesthesia.

A reminder to adopt, not shop, from the Humane Society: “For dogs in puppy mills, conditions like these are the norm — and no matter what the sellers say, breeders like these are the source of most dogs sold online, in pet stores or at flea markets.”
