After a grueling first of day of competition, 19 kids from Ohio have made it to the third round of competitive spelling at the 2018 Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Out of 11 million students, 519 spellers across the country, ages 8 to 15, advanced from their classrooms to the renowned Bee’s stage at the Gaylord National Harbor Convention Center in Maryland this week. Yesterday, the kids took a multiple choice spelling and vocabulary test, and orally spelled a word on stage in front of hundreds of people. Today, the remaining 452 students continue on with the hopes of making it to tomorrow's finals.

But, honestly, Bee Week is about so much more than trying to spell "pierrot" correctly, like Southern Local Elementary School (of Salineville, Ohio) sixth grader Justus Black did. The Bee's goal is to help students improve their spelling, build vocabularies, understand concepts, learn skills and make friends ... plus offer free time to explore the National Harbor.

However, prizes at stake for the champion speller are well worth the hype. They include more than $40,000 cash, an engraved trophy and, the best part, a pizza party.

Catch these young masters of morphology in action this week on ESPN. And also check out what the Bee is all about with this video below:
