Last year, the Greater Cleveland Aquarium hosted one of the more than 900 Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) events that were held in 85 countries around the globe.

On July 21, the aquarium will again join PADI in celebrating International Women’s Dive Day with special programming.

“Diving is definitely a valued skill here,” says Greater Cleveland Aquarium GM Tami Brown in a press release announcing the event. “If our team is any indication, observing the aquatic world firsthand makes divers impassioned ambassadors for ocean conservation.”

Women’s Dive Day events include multiple opportunities to meet aquarium dive team members. Underwater talks will take place at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. There will also be conversations at a shark gallery information table.

“When I discovered a love of diving, my friends and family were understandably a little skeptical that I could make it my full-time job in Northeast Ohio,” says Dive Safety Coordinator Halle Minshall. “I hope we can inspire a few youngsters to give recreational diving a chance because it has benefits that impact all aspects of your life—helping to improve communication, foster new relationships and cultivate a sense of independence.”

There will also be SCUBA-themed kids’ crafts, a dive trivia challenge and dive-themed temporary tattoos for children. Certified divers who visit on PADI International Women’s Dive Day are eligible for $5 off same-day general admission for them and one guest with the presentation of proper ID.

Certified divers visiting on July 21 will also be entered to win a free future Shark Dive CLE experience that includes admission into the aquarium for the diver and one viewing guest, a tour of the aquarium dive platform, an exhibit walk-through and fish identification session, one dive in the 230,000-gallon shark exhibit, use of all dive equipment needed and as many souvenir shark teeth as the guest diver can find.
