Local jazz musician Cliff Habian began taking piano lessons when he was only 9. He then attended Cleveland Institute of Music as a composition major and even held down a gig as Director of American Music and Department Head of Keyboard Studies at the Cleveland Music School Settlement for 13 years.

Over the course of his career, he’s worked with a range of artists, including Joe Lovano, Freddy Cole, Frank Morgan, Jane Ira Bloom, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Dion, Jamey Haddad , Wayne Newton, Bobby Vinton, Eliot Zigmund, Ernie Krivda, Dominick Farinacci and many others. He’s played in Russia, Thailand and Panama.

Habian, who currently teaches at the Fine Arts Association in Willoughby, will celebrate the release of his new book, Jazz Piano Essentials, with a book signing and performance at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, at Nighttown. It took him seven years to write the tome, a technical "how to" type of book.

Tickets are $10.
