Inspired by the New York Club Kids of the late '80s and early '90s, Mahall's 20 Lanes threw a 'Club Kidz '90s Dance Party' to great success earlier this summer. Now the Lakewood bowling alley/bar/venue has decided to create a monthly dance party for Clevelanders to express themselves through art, fashion and dance.

"At Mahall's we are not about cookie cutter dance parties and try to create an immersive experience for the party attendee," bar manager and co-event party planner, Cassie Trainer tells Scene. "There's not enough of these opportunities in Cleveland, in my opinion, so we want to make it a regular event and let people be the quirky, fashionable weirdos and dancing queens that they are."

The goal of the parties is not to copy what the New York Club Kids did, but to encourage Cleveland to create their own scene inspired by the uniqueness and innovation of the past. Club Kids were made infamous for their wild parties in fast food restaurants, abandoned buildings and even a semi-truck. Each party had a fun theme, like the iconic "Disco Bloodbath."

"I grew up loving house music and the film Party Monster. Sans drugs, I'd love to give Cleveland an opportunity to celebrate that very creative club culture scene in a safe way," says Haley Himiko Hudson Morris, artist and special events assistant/conceptual designer for Mahall's parties.

The events includes popular club music from the '90s as well as specialty cocktails inspired by the staples of the NYC club scene. Drinks may contain edible glitter, candy bracelet koozies, ring pop garnishes, Capri-Sun cocktails, and rainbow sprinkle rims. A gender non-specific "Queen of the Disco" competition occurs at each event, with prizes awarded to the winners.

"Every month I hear about people asking where they can go dance in a fun, safe space," Trainer says.

According to Hudson Morris, New York City and other big cities have their own Club Kids-themed party nights, so why not Cleveland?

Both Trainer and Hudson Morris confess that the parties may be a little self-indulgent, as both have clothing collections full of fake feathers, fake fur, jumpsuits, sequins, masks and other apparatuses that don't make it out of the house as often as they'd like.

"Hot dog hats, animal mascot heads, green fur capes, bullet bras, top hats, platform shoes, rhinestone football pads and angel wings, anything goes, really," says Hudson Morris.

The "CLUB KIDZ R US: '90s Dance Party" returns to Mahall's 20 Lanes on Friday, Sept. 14 from 9 p.m. until the bar closes at 2 a.m. Mahall's is located at 13200 Madison Ave. in Lakewood.

Terrestrial Brewing Bartender Launches New Company That Will Donate to Local Charities

Posted By on Mon, Sep 10, 2018 at 2:58 PM

About two years ago, Tony Kost decided he wanted to start his own company, and he needed a logo. He started to think about what his dog Oscar James was to him as a companion and realized he could christen the company with his dog's name.

But the more he thought about it, the more he realized that he wanted to do something other than a commercial enterprise.

“When I got sober two years ago, [Oscar James] was there next to me,” says Kost one afternoon while tending bar at Terrestrial, the Battery Park brewery where he works. “I wanted to do some good and reached out to [local artist] Aaron ‘Pants’ Sechrist, who I’ve known for years and years. I wanted to see if he wanted to do a design for me. We met a couple of times. and he got me the logo.”

Free and discounted dental services are being offered by Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine’s main clinic to new patients who sign up for a comprehensive care treatment plan during “Admitting Days,” Sept. 17 or 18.

Eligible recipients must be at least 18 and have never enrolled as a patient at the dental clinic. That's it. That's all you need to be eligible for free dental work.

All who are eligible can receive a free dental exam, free X-rays and optional cleaning for $25 and receive a $100 voucher toward future dental services as part of an accepted treatment plan.

Following X-rays and the exam, the clinic will schedule each patient’s next appointment aimed at crafting a personalized, detailed treatment plan.

Depending on the procedure, these services are being offered at discounts of 40 to 50 percent in comparison to standard dental office rates. CWRU's dental students and residents treat more than 8,000 patients a year at discounted prices, including university students, employees and the general public.

All patients are treated by third- and fourth-year dental students and residents, with supervision from dental school faculty members.

“Dental health is a vital aspect of overall health, and this is an opportunity to show patients the benefits of seeing a dentist regularly,” said Ali Syed, assistant professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the dental school in a press release. “It’s important for people to understand the difference between regular dental care and when they need emergency dental care.”

Admitting Day’s services are by appointment only, with two time-slots available: 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. The number of appointments is limited, and appointments can be made by calling 216-368-6800.

The dental school’s clinic is located at 2124 Cornell Road on the Case Western Reserve campus in Cleveland.
