When it opened in 2014, the Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern was a revival of one of Cleveland’s most beloved and historic clubs.

Come Saturday, November 17th, the doors will once again be closed. That’s when the current lease expires and management will pull up stakes. Fans will still be able to hang out and eat dogs at the Gordon Square location. The future of the legendary club, however, once again is uncertain.

“We’re looking forward to focusing on Gordon Square,” says owner Sean Watterson. “We’ve been splitting ourselves in half. We’ve had fun and done some really good stuff.”

In that time, the club hosted more than 750 bands, which played 1,250 separate gigs:

Here is management’s complete statement on the matter:

Our lease at the Euclid Tavern is up at the end of this year, and after much deliberation, and in consultation with our landlord, University Circle Inc., we’ve made the decision to close our chapter at the Euc. We are proud of the work we’ve done together over these past four plus years as privileged caretakers of this legendary Cleveland landmark.

We brought the venue back to life, during what was a very difficult transition for us in the wake of Sean Kilbane’s passing. I will be forever grateful for the passion and effort everyone has put in to making our time at the Euclid Tavern meaningful and memorable.

Since our first show with Uno Lady and Shale Satans, through shows with touring acts like the Oblivians, Dwight Twilley, Jonathan Richman, Yonatan Gat and King Gizzard, as well a multitude of talented local musicians, we have hosted over 750 different bands, performing over 1,250 gigs during our tenure. Thousands of musicians shared their talents with us - and we are proud and grateful for their contribution to the cultural life of our city.

We hosted meaningful conversations on politics, the economy, arts and sciences, and local history, including important dialogues about Hough, East Cleveland, immigration restrictions, and the future of arts funding. We hosted hundreds of events, including author talks, storytelling nights, comedy shows, film screenings, drag shows, and even Ohio’s State Pinball Championship.
And we built partnerships to help shine a light on Cleveland’s incredible poetry scene by hosting adult and youth open mics and poetry slams. Congratulations to both the youth and adult slam teams for their representation of our city at national finals competitions.

Thank you to our programming partners at the Institute for the Science of Origins, Twelve Literary Arts, One Mic Open, University Circle Inc., MOCA Cleveland, Case Western Reserve University, The City Club of Cleveland, the Cleveland Museum of Art, Classical Revolution, Literary Cleveland, Roots of American Music, Urban Otaku, the Cleveland Pinball League and countless others for sharing your time and talent with us.

We look forward to continuing these partnerships as we turn our focus back to our roots in Gordon Square. We hope to take the best of what we learned east back west with us to continue the Happy Dog’s role in our community’s rich cultural life.

We will be open east through Saturday, November 17th, with plenty of great events still on the calendar. We look forward to seeing what the future brings for the Tavern and for Uptown, and we look forward to continuing to build on the great work we’ve been doing over our first ten years in Gordon Square.
