Modern CLE, a slick new media outlet specifically targeting women, has launched in Cleveland. Edited by Jillian Kramer, a freelance journalist originally from Canton, the digital-only publication will cover news, politics, lifestyle, entertainment and career and finance issues.

"We are so lucky in Cleveland to have so many amazing media outlets," Kramer told Scene by phone Monday. "But there are none exclusively geared toward women. My goal is to fill in that gap."

Kramer recently relocated from New York City, where she'd written for publications like Glamour, Wall Street Journal and Food & Wine.  She said that the site has been in the works for some time, but that she deliberately waited for the midterm elections to launch.

"I don't know how to phrase this, but there's always a difficulty when you define something as being 'for women,'" she said. "I wanted to be sure that we were going to be taken seriously as a journalism outlet, where women not only can come to get inspiration for home decor, but can also get important news and information to help them make informed decisions."

Kramer is editing the site and said she has a stable of writers and photographers who will produce content that will be published Monday through Thursday. She said she hopes it's clear that she cares deeply about the photography and design on the site, a priority she expects her audience of active Instagram and Pinterest users to appreciate. Eventually, she hopes to support the site with advertising revenue, and said she'll offer traditional tile advertising and a suite of editorial and social media options for interested clients.

Kramer said that in New York, one of the things she missed most about living in Cleveland was the vibrant community of women in town. She looks forward to telling their stories — and already is. Modern CLE launched with a story about Cleveland Flea founder Stephanie Sheldon, written by Kramer herself, and has already published two new pieces about female politicians by freelance contributors. Those stories appear under the "Noteworthy" content vertical, which encompasses news and politics. "Aspire" will tackle career and money issues. "Life, Styled" will be the entertainment section, covering food, fashion, interior design and other topics.

The target audience of Modern CLE will be engaged and digitally savvy women in the region. While Kramer said the content is geared for women "from generation z to generation x," early analytics suggest that the majority of visitors to the site are women between 25-34.

"That's a huge group," Kramer said. "That could be a recent college grad just starting out in her career, or a mom with two kids. It's a wide net."

Modern CLE held a launch party Sunday evening at Ohio City's new Heyday Collective salon. The event included a live interview with owner and proprietor Erin Frazee, and Kramer said the "intimate, vulnerable" conversation with Frazee about her life and career was exactly the sort of material readers should expect on the site.
